Engaging and Informative
This was a thorough presentation of the American Revolution meant for kids. Its vocabulary and subject matter make it more for teenagers than preteens. I most liked how the revolution was presented in its fuller context, with the discovery of America, the founding of the colonies and the Seven Years’ War. Unfortunately, the book does not include maps, which I think would be a major help to understanding the subject. The author did a great job explaining how the many taxation schemes imposed by Parliament riled the American colonists to revolt. A few important matters were missed—Ticonderoga, Benedict Arnold’s treason, Nathanael Greene’s campaign in the south—but these aside, the book gives a solid foundation for explaining the origin of the United States and what it means to be American.

Appears to be a well researched book on the American Revolution. I appreciated that women’s role and famous women were highlighted. The key points at the end of the chapter, timeline, and glossary were helpful. To check your child’s comprehension, the activities and quiz in the back are useful. If you have a child who loves American history, they will enjoy this book and you will probably learn a lot too if you use as a read aloud.

I am not American and so I feel that my level of American history knowledge appriximates that of most school children. This was a detailed list of how the American Revolution came about, the events during and the aftermath. I learnt a lot of good information and interstingfacts I didn’t know before. I only gave ot 4 stars though as I feel most kids would find it tricky to keep the large number of facts clear. Each chapter finished with a summary of key points, which was good but I did struggle with the quiz at the end with so many names, dates and locations to keep sorted.
