I am woman hear me roar. Lol
Excuse the poor video. I wasn’t prepared to record, when I jumped up to get my phone the wind blew my fire away. This puppy worked in less than 20 seconds. I honestly didn’t expect it to work. I was on could 9. I have been trying for months with a different one. I have drilled for literally hours with the other one and nothing. So, when I tried this one, I was not even prepared for a fire period, and definitely not in a few seconds. Can I tell ya one more time? I’m going to tell ya one more time. Lol. This chick MADE FIRE, woohoo. Watch out Disney World, here I come.Buy this thing, have a blast, amaze your friends….heck buys them one too.Highly recommend, will be buying more for gifts.

I have started 2 bona fide fires with this kit only.
I have been wanting to start a fire with the “Rubbing sticks together” method since I was a small boy. I have tried many, many, many times.I thought if I bought a “kit” that at least I would know that I have the needed supplies to make it happen.Last weekend I received the kit and gave it a try. I immediately got smoke and took that as a very good sign. I tried for the remainder of the weekend about six to eight more times. I got plenty of smoke but no ember that I knew of. (I did create an ember but not big enough) I was a quite disappointed.I read a few more blogs on the subject and watched another video or two. The advice that stuck out was that you have to go until your arm is aching and you just can’t go any longer. Then you must go another ten seconds or more. You must get and keep an idea in your head. You are creating wood “dust” that needs to fill the “slot” in the hearth board and that is where your ember needs to start. I saw a woman make a fire and she said after she got a pile of dust in the “slot” that was smoking a bit she just left it for a a full 60 seconds. I did the same and waved my hand very gently near the wood dust “pile”. ( It was VERY subdued to the point it left one thinking that it was not enough to start a fire.) The pile eventually produced more smoke and I finally saw a tiny ember. At that point I very gently blew on that area. When I aimed my pursed lips properly I could see the ember reacting and growing. When I felt confident with the ember I pushed the “Jute” tinder (supplied with kit) up against the ember. I continued to blow on that ember in the direction of the jute tinder. The jute start to catch as well. Once the Jute had a very good ember going I just continued to blow until the Jute became very hot and red. A few more breaths & Eureka! The Jute erupted into a very nice ball of flame. As my pile was on a piece of cardboard I picked it up and blew more vigorously and the cardboard erupted into flames as well. At this point it would have been cake to turn this into a nice campfire. This was an eight inch high three inches around ball of flames. An hour or two later I went back outside and in ONE TRY I repeated another fire.I am ecstatic! What a sense of accomplishment! I literally stood up, beat my chest like Tom Hanks in “Castaway”, and yelled out loud enough to get a few neighbors looking in my direction, “Look….what I……have created!”I know a great many of you probably think I am ridiculous, but….I will never for the rest of my life forget this experience. I have fantasized about being able to create fire this way since as long as I can remember. Much more than…..well…..many decades. So don’t let being an old fart stop you.In fact, I had much better luck slowing down the “drilling” and putting a tad less torque on the whole assembly which made it much easier to just keep drilling long enough to get a nice sized pile of wood dust/ember.I see no reason why one couldn’t do the stick and trough method with this experience. Or even the hand drill method. But using the bow does seem like it would be easier.Again, many may laugh at me for this, but I really feel like “Utse” the Ice Man. I think I got his name wrong. Great movie by the way. Based on the very real 6000 year old mummified body found by hikers on a glacier in Europe. Just search for “Ice Man.”

works but wears out quickly
I bought this bow drill to make fires with my scouts. Of course, I had to give it a try to figure it out before I let the kids use it. Here’s my verdict:It works! After about 5 tries, I was able to make a fire with only the materials in the box. However, the spindle is already worn down by at least two inches and the hearth board is half used up. I guess I could have expected that, but I was hoping the bow drill would last me a little longer. I’m glad a bought the double pack.

Great to teach on how to make fire
Very light weight and easy to transport. It was durable and we used it to teach our family how to start a camp fire. Very easy to use.

Just ok
I work at a historic site and we use primitive fire making skills in a daily basis (bow drills, pump drill, etc) and picked a few of these up hoping that they would be good for women or kids to learn on.Overall, not the best quality. You can certainly get a fire from these, and pretty quickly. The heart board doesn’t last long and I imagine the same will be true if the spindle as well.I’m curious to see how this functions on a different hearth (the one included is a very lightweight piece of wood that is expended quickly). The bow concept is interesting enough, but it also is made of a flimsy, flat pice of wood. It’s also very short and creates a short draw on the spindle. This is probably 2.5 – 3 out of 5 stars.Slightly above a toy while also falling below a proper Bushcraft quality item.

just what we were looking for
I got this for my 11 year old son for his birthday, and he has tried it out a handful of times. It seems sturdy enough that it could function properly, but he has not mastered the skill yet. He has gotten it to smoke, so I know it can work. I got the two pack because I figured he and a friend would want to do it at the same time, and I think that was a good choice. I also figured if one of them broke, there would be a back up. The price was right, and it has so far provided (supervised) entertainment, and an accurate depiction of how to build a fire this way.

Used this in my high school physics class! Itâs awesomeness!
Pure awesomeness! Used it in my classroom. I have the states leading rusher in my class, and they were louder cheering when they made fire, than when he scores a TD! Love it! Will be buying more.
