Subconsciously, I pressed myself into the loch’s banks as that summer season inched ahead. We might acquired off to a rocky starting, however I began to see Treig differently. There was one thing about this land that informed me simply to carry on some time longer. It would’ve been only a whisper on the time, however I knew it was undoubtedly value heeding. I simply knew that was it. This was the place.
Seventy-four-year-old Ken Smith has spent the previous 4 many years within the Scottish Highlands. His house is a log cabin nestled close to Loch Treig, generally known as “the lonely loch,” the place he lives off the land. He fishes for his supper, chops his personal wooden and even brews his personal tipple. He’s, within the truest sense of the phrase, a hermit.
From his working-class origins in Derbyshire, Ken all the time sensed that there was extra ot life than an empty 9 to 5. Then in the future in 1974, an assault from a bunch of drunken males left him for lifeless. Decided to alter his prospects, Ken give up his job and spent his adolescence touring within the Yukon. It was right here, within the huge wilderness of northwestern Canada, that he honed his survival expertise and grew nearer to nature. Returning to Britain, he continued his nomadic way of life, wandering north and residing in huts till he lastly reached Loch Treig. Intriguing Book by A Thoughtful, Caring, Unique Person
This book is well worth a read. It is not only a very interesting story about a person who took âthe road less traveled.â It is also a very inspiring book about a man who clearly possesses the âindomitable human spirit.â Although I struggled with the pages that described in detail vegetables, trees, etc., (and, frankly sped-read them), many readers will find them interesting and informative. Ken understands and is sensitive to the reality that many of us will not find ourselves ready to fully embrace this road that he has traveled. I believe that he balances that understanding with his passion and love for this road that he consciously chose. Go read this book!

Great read, poor print
Many pages are faded in a brand new book. Clearly some printing issues. Other than that an editable read!

The Path not Taken
I loved this book. The author chose a life that I would never have chosen. But he is so honest in what he shares that I really felt I understood what he was doing. I also appreciated that he didnât fall back on any âmagicâ like having a trust fund, or a rich aunt, or some other source of money. He was able to live an unconventional life because he was willing to put in the hard physical work â and keep his wants/needs to a minimum.

Both entertaining and moving
I wasn’t expecting much but found myself quickly engrossed in the crazy adventures of the author as a young man. Along the lines of Into the Wild, he hurls himself into the wilderness. And survives. He realizes he’s not cut out for the 9 to 5 life and sets out in his native Great Britain to live alone off the grid. His detailed story of how he accomplishes this for almost 40 years is riveting. Against all odds, he is a very content, kind and well-balanced soul who has words of wisdom for today’s young and young-at-heart.

An intriguing life story told simply and honestly!
I love reading memoirs, especially from those who live extremely different lives that I do. The Way of the Hermit offered just that. Author Ken Smith shares simply and honestly about his life from a young age, covering the experiences that slowly led him to walk away from the expected rut with job, paycheck, mortgage and family, to one of exploring the Yukon and the wilds of Scotland – eventually homesteading in depths of Treig with the owners permission (an unexpected stroke of luck).I can’t imagine heading off into the Yukon with a backpack and scant supplies for a year, living off what I could catch and harvest, topped up by limited purchased supplies. But he did just that. Imagine being far away from civilization in all kinds of weather, doing everything with the simplest of supplies, and being entirely responsible for any medical issues that might arrive. While it is not a life I would chose, I was entranced. When he finally settled in a home of his own, built by his own hands, in Treig, I definitely felt more kinship. It wasn’t an easy life. Every piece of wood to keep him warm had to be cut and shaped by his hand. His struggle to get to town on foot for supplies he could not produce himself during all kinds of weather lead to some scary moments. And no matter how serious his health issue or how sick he felt, if he couldn’t deal with it himself, he had to walk to the closest town for treatment.A great read that covers everything from the authors life, to his thoughts on civilization, to descriptions of how he built his house, gardened and fished for food.

What a warm and inspirational Read!
I wanted to start back at page one when I had gotten to the last page! This man’s story is so inspirational and so well told. I would recommend everyone to read! There is so much of life’s truths and humble insight within it’s pages. The awe of his freedom felt while reliving this man’s life gives you such a magical perspective on what we are really meant for on this earth. The grand finale was all the pictures at the end of the story! Just WOW!!!

I really enjoyed this book! Ken Smith is a truly wonderful, unassuming person, with good values and principles, living the life I wish I had the guts to. On that front I found it very interesting! The book was well written – simple, easy to read, yet poignant.

Loved every minute of this book.

A lovely book – perfect material for a short break away with a long waiting time at an airport. Very unusual life.
Partick Potter –
A light, easy read of an extraordinary life of a man living, for the most part, off grid in the highlands of Scotland. The author comes across as a little conceited at times as he criticises the lifestyles of regular folk who work for a living but he makes many good points about the attractions of the outdoor life and simple living and presents his own story and achievements (such as building a log cabin not once but twice!) modestly and engagingly.

I was recommended to read this book by a friend and I am so glad that I have. A very emotional account of one manâs life and how he has chosen to live it. Sad in many ways but overall a lovely book. The last chapter âLive to 102â sums the story up so well. Highly recommended.
