This has a good “beet” and you can dance to it!
The title intrigued me, as did the description. Purchased one for myself as well as a couple extra for sharing. The stories touched me so much the first time I read them, that I re-read them, all more than twice. Each time pulled new meaning into the stories from my own experiences. We can all relate to the challenges that life throws at the author, and her wit and eloquence at describing them is wonderful. I laughed at the beet story, reminding me of my own beloved grandmothers, marveled at the strength when face with health issues, relished the meaning of a true friend, and cheered the power of NO. These stories are so descriptive of the human condition, once is not enough. I look forward to more coming from this author. As a critic on the Dick Clark show would say of a song, “it has a good beet, and you can dance to it” , same for this book.

The Beet Goes On: Essays on Friendship and Breaking …
The Beet Goes On: Essays on Friendship and Breaking New Ground catches plenty of light in it’s many facets. The delicacy and warmth of Susan Troccoloâs prose evokes my genuine interest and caring for stories of her Ukrainian grandmother Baba, her life-long friend Kate and living through cancer and flourishing towards recovery. By the end of this 61-page jewel, âdelicacyâ and âwarmthâ have turned into something even more compelling & nourishing — the actual gift of this book — spiritual intelligence and substance.John Fox, CPTauthor of Finding What You Didnât Lose: Expressing Your Truth and Creativity Through Poem-Making

” She gives us the deep love of a true friend
Because of the violent, physical, visceral reaction I have at the faintest glimmer of the taste of beets, I pronounce that they are poison. I announced that in the grocery store one day much to the horror of the mom in front of me who, I’m sure, was trying to convince her children-in-tow of their health and savory benefits. As such, the title of this precious collection did not attract me . . . but the subtitle, “Essays on Friendship and Breaking Ground” certainly did. I read the e-version and immediately ordered two copies so I could read it again with the book in my hands, turning page after page hungry for more of what Susan had to tell me. I had to have one for a friend as well. Susan declares, “I am Ukrainian, I am entitled to grow beets,” in as forceful a way as her “No” bellowed, “from deep in my chest, from my gut, from my pelvis and genitals and legs down to my feet and through all my toes.” She gives us the deep love of a true friend, a tutorial on dealing with illness and grief with humor and grace, and the permission to reflect. Makes me want to sit in a garden and share a cup of tea with her . . . and maybe even a beet, because Susan gives us a little nudge to open our minds. I recommend you do as I did and order two copies. One for you and one for a friend.

An amazing look at life
An amazing look at life, love and a vulnerability that is embraced and realized for what it is. Susan has an amazing wit and gift of bringing you into her thought process and you find yourself fighting her battle with her and rejoicing in her spirit. Her humor tackles whatever is thrown at her and her spirit is to be admired. The book was recommended to me and I’m so glad I found it. I look forward to more from Susan!

I am alone in the house for a bit, after a busy summer and there is just a bit of sunshine on the deck…if you can find a spot like this, and if you have an innate appreciation for the emotional depth of truth and good good humor, then pick up Susan’s book. (We of “a certain age” resonate with the stories of meeting our challenges with varying degrees of grace.) This book is a “teaser” for a longer book in the works: I know I shall be ordering several of those, too, in an attempt to spread some wisdom and joy and belly laughs!

Although it is not clear how the author proceeds, “The beet goes on” reaches the heart at first reading and bypasses the mind. Susan Troccolo walks the narrow path stretching from vulnerability to confidence, she walks it lightly and tenderly. Life at its best, eyes open, pounding heart and a smile on the lips. The book has a draw back: it is too short.
