You Don’t Have to Have Heart Disease to Enjoy this Book!
You don’t have to have heart disease or be a vegetarian to enjoy the recipies in this cookbook. They’re easy to follow, and most have beautiful photos to show you what the finished products will look like- mostly very colorful dishes with lots of eye appeal. We’ve tried 8 of the recipies so far, and are very pleased. Before you get started, make sure you have some key ingredients in many of the recipies: balsamic vinegar, chickpeas, cilantro, cayenne pepper, frozen corn (organic, of course) and spicy brown mustard.I suggest you start with the soups: the Red Lentil and Dill Soup with Mint is a wonderful combination of flavors that will give you a sample of what you’re going to find in the book. It’s such a bright-tasting soup that you’ll want to try some of the others. Try the Tarrazan Soup, but make sure you go out of your way to find some FRESH tarragon in your market; it makes a big difference, Georgie’s soup is a tasy combination of fennel, mushrooms, lentils and potatoes; if you’ve never used fennel before, this is a great way to start enjoying it.The hummus recipe gave us the best hummus we’ve EVER tasted- never going back to store-bought again. It’s so easy to make (chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, mustard and black pepper), and it’s used in several of the recipies in the book.In addition to the recipies there are helpful comments throughout the book, including suggestions for some commercially-prepared items that are consistent with the Esselstyn diet. We’ve tried 2 brands of breads made without oil, and they were excellent. One minor criticism: several of the recipies are heavy on the garlic. No big deal- follow the recipie the first time, and if you agree with me about the garlic, just cut it back the next time you make it. This is a cookbook you’ll use again and again.

Recipes Galore
This is a nicely made colorful recipe book. It contains a lot of healthy recipes…for heart health. I have tried a couple that I like. It is a book for a very health conscious person willing to sacrifice some of the items we find very enjoyable to eat. I think if followed even a few meals a week it would make a big difference in heart health, which is what I am trying to do.

With some adjustments it’s an excellent cookbook
I’ve now made my way through bunch of the recipes in this book. Ann Esselstyn is a surprisingly good cook for being untrained. It’s still too soon to tell, but this one may just become one of my ‘go to’ healthy cookbooks. However, remember this is my personal opinion, she does tend to over-season a bit. For example – her fat free hummus recipes are all really good – BUT – I lighten the spicy mustard in her base recipe. I like the milder taste of hummus for itself. The jalapeno & salsa corn muffins don’t work – corn meal is by it’s nature a mild flavored grain and the salsa completely takes over. The Middle Eastern Chickpea stew is reputably famous, coming from a bistro in Aspen. But we all thought the spices were simply over-the-top too heavy. Now, this sounds like a negative review – BUT – recipes are a matter of taste. When I made the Chickpea stew the second time and adjusted the spices to taste, it went from a 3 star dish to a 5 star in our rating system. The same situation with the Singapore Dal. But what makes the cookbook a keeper for me are the lunch recipes/ideas – I have made them all and they’re all winners! We really like almost all of her veggie burgers, the Eat Loaf, the Kale-Stuffed Tugboats, the Polenta Pie. And her non fat dressings are wonderful – finally, non fat dressings that TASTE GOOD. This cookbook is healthy everyday home cooking and with these caveats I highly recommend it.

Very Interesting book
Reads easily and makes a lot of common sense. Recipes are great. I’m brand new to being a vegan and no oil. Not hard to follow, but you must be willing to commit to the lifestyle.

Excellent Cookbook
After a health scare I bought this book in an attempt to improve my health and prevent health issues that are seemingly lurking around the corner. Iâm so happy I made the decision. All of the recipes Iâve tried are easy to follow, the ingredients are easy to find and ones most ppl have in their kitchens and theyâre easy on the budget. Iâm trying all of the recipes in the book and so far the ones Iâve made are delicious. Iâve lost a few pounds, my brain fog is alleviating, I have more energy, Iâm sleeping better and I feel really good. Iâm convinced that itâs because of the lifestyle changes Iâve made including using this cookbook. I highly recommend this to everyone. You will not be disappointed.

I wanted this for the variety of hummus recipes, but mostly because I have watched the videos on youtube of Jane and Ann, the authors, cooking these. They are inspiring to watch. The foods always look simple and do able. I wanted to have the recipes on hand. I’m a visual learner and get a lot of inspiration from cookbooks with photos. I was already figuring out how to eat plant based, but I think, being able to stay with it long term requires some encouragement from the selection of cookbooks I keep around. The hummus recipes are valuable. Just that one change, making a batch of hummus every week, has helped me stay away from butter and salad dressing, and lose weight effortlessly without feeling deprived of anything.

I bought this book and the how not to die cookbook, and for my surprise this one has no good recipes, they don’t make you feel full, almost vegetables and fruits but not many protein and carbs and they are really important, i don’t recommend it if you want to learn how to make lunch recipes or dinner meals. Is more for the sides, if you want to learn that buy it.
