    Overwhelmed with awe and wonder…..
One of the best books I’ve ever read! The horror of all Nora went through – unbelievable things people did to her out of hate and spite! Even her own family! I had a hard time reading it. But oh the joy that comes through the great people that help her, especially Janet. The ending, oh the ending is so emotionally beautiful. Couldn’t hardly put the book down.

a very sad book and a frightening story, but wonderfully written.
To think this book was written based on a true story is both frightening, unbelievable and yet beautiful. Well presented and well written. How a young girl could be treated the way she was because she loved someone, made a mistake out of love and lived the life she was forced into, was horrible. But, I always felt there was more to it….and there is. A great read.

    Beautiful
Nora’s story was tragically beautiful. At no point during my reading did I get bored with the story. I felt like I was right there experiencing what Nora did. It was educational and Nora had they had the same laws in 1994 I too would have been committed.

    Provocative yet captivating story
Hard to read at times, but found myself unable to stop reading and put the book down. I don’t want to give away too much. But this story is absolutely gripping. The hardships and horror endured, the threat of a life lost and wasted away, yet the triumph of the spirit and soul. I found myself cheering for this girl/lady to never give up. Keep fighting. Makes you reflect on your own life, journey, and how you handle challenges. Acknowledging with gratitude at how lucky you may truly be.

    A very emotional read
This was a book that intrigued me from the beginning. There was a point when I almost put the book down thinking I do not need to read this due to the abuse of this poor girl. However I continued on and decided to finish. It is not something I will soon forget. I don’t remember how I came about owning this book. But at the end I was surprised to read it was based on a true story.

    Nora’s Story
Oh, A beautiful story of love, hate, sorrow and finally triumph. It was depressing to read for the first half of the book but determination, support from medical staff led to the growth of the main character. It was an amazing read.

The Girl Behind the Gates points to the fear of mental difficulties and what was deemed moral deficiency that affected everybody and often sent unwed and pregnant women to mental institutions. The law was clear and stayed unchanged until 1959. The perspective is shocking, and, in my opinion, it is important to remember that this happened less than seventy years ago.Nora Jennings is a seventeen-year-old who gets to feel the consequences of a single night of passion. Labelled as morally defective and incarcerated in the local mental hospital, she lives through years of brutal conditions.Sister Cummings, a proverbial Nurse Ratched (of Cuckoo’s Nest fame), is the nemesis who knows how to make her patients, especially the young and hopeful, suffer.Janet Humphreys is a psychiatrist that arrives on the scene much later, but her insight and humanity bring hope to some patients. The blend of traumatic experiences, imperious nurses, horrifying treatments, and evolving friendships blend in a compelling document that will leave the reader pondering how easy it is to destroy the human spirit. Yet, Ms Davies manages to convey hope – even for institutionalised individuals. For me, the highlight was the deft use of the healing power of music. This is a book that will stay with you and make you think.

This is an incredibly sad book. I had to keep reading it just hoping things would get better, and eventually they did, in the end. The events were so hard to believe that I had to do my own research on the internet to verify that pregnant unwed mothear were really locked up in mental institutions in the U.K. in the 1940’s. Yes they were, under the policies of Winston Churchill! Generally these were poor women who came into the system through the workhouses. One would think that a well off, “loving” family would find a way around this such as keeping the pregnancy hidden and arranging a private adoption. However there is a doozy of a plot twist near the end of the book that makes the parents horrifying behaviour more plausible (without blaming the victim at all). It’s a well written book and worth knowing the truth about an aspect of the history of women’s rights that has been swept under the rug, as nobody’s life should ever be.

A well told story based on true events. This book will touch the heart and emotions, whilst it’s harrowing and difficult reading at times, it felt important to me to learn Nora’s story. What hits you is the fact this was happening in our parent’s lifetimes!I could not put it down, I was rooting for Nora every step of the way, this story of Nora’s strength in adversity and fighting back against all odds will definitely will stay with me.One reader claims to have had experience in institutions and puts this book down to fiction, but these things truly happened, there is ample evidence to back up Eugenics and the stigma attached to having a child outside of marriage. I also met two women that had spent most of their lives in institutions and they were in their 80’s, having been institutionalised since their teenage years. Both were reliable sources. It’s easy to dismiss mental health patients as an unreliable source but not so much when there is valid medical evidence and diagnosis of PTSD caused by ill treatment and lots of facts to back up what was happening socially.
