Buy this book, read it. Then buy multiple copies to give to people you care about.
Martha. My goodness. Thank you for this gift! This book is incredible, powerful, funny at times, practical, and transformational. I am so grateful to have read this at a time of major transformation in my life, it came right when I needed it. Something that is paying off immediately in my life is thinking throughout the day when a frustration pops up, “I allow everything in the universe to be as it is in this moment.” and then “I surrender all resistance to the universe being as it is in this moment.” I can’t say enough good things about your book Martha. Again, thank you!!!

    Wow!! Awakening, fascinating, humorous, touching
Impactful: 5/5Exercises: 5/5New information: 5/5Interesting: 5/5Vulnerable/touching: 5/5Funny: 5/5Truly inspiring: 5/5The only resource you need in your personal development toolkit: 3/5This book shocked me! I was surprised to love the Divine Comedy references throughout adding a unique “flavor” to the message unlike other books with a similar message (if there is one comparable to this). It is such a personal, difficult subject but her style and humor is perfect to break up the intense focus and let you enjoy the journey even more.I had no expectations not being familiar with her work and was very impressed. Interested in her other books and courses. Need more Martha Beck in my life (and in the world).I was blown away by the exercises in each chapter. They drew from so many other concepts and experts (e.g. Karpman Drama Triangle, Byron Katie) that I want to dig deeper into. The writing style is very sophisticated from a very intelligent author but it is still accessible to a broad audience (the majority of us who don’t have a PhD from Harvard) and her zany humor was cracking me up! Such a unique contrast to the eloquent passages. It leaves the reader with a couple homework assignments. One very simple (authentic/nature) yet extremely uncomfortable and challenging (in the context of social expectations). The other even more profound and life altering which you will discover at the conclusion.I have read many self help books and this is not a beginner’s guide to mindfulness or meditation or anything like that. It is much more. And with very practical exercises. My only complaint is that a couple exercises really resonated with me and seemed to gain traction on changing negative false beliefs leaving me wanting more.

    LIFE CHANGING
This is my fourth book from Martha Beck, and yet it was still life-changing. I love the way she writes: she’s lighthearted while deeply profound. She’s funny and brilliant. Plus, what she has to say is just perfect. Her life journey gives her personal experience of what she is teaching, which is priceless.I love this book in particular because it’s so simple. I can recommend it to anyone. I used to recommend “Steering by Starlight,” but now I recommend this.I’ve read a lot of spiritual/self-help books, but SBS was still my go to for a lot of people (or Becoming Magic and The Game of Life and How to Play It if I wanted to teach them about manifestation).Lastly, I was thrilled to learn she reads it!!!! OMG what a treat. When I first heard her voice I assumed it was just got the beginning but it was still nice. Then she continued and I was so excited!! It’s been a while since she’s done that and I thought she was over reading her books. This was a nice surprise! Thank you!

Martha gets carried away with Dante
Although Miss Beck is an amazing, courageous woman who writes wonderfully insightful and empowering books, using Dante’s work to scaffold her theories for living an authentic life isa bit over the top and, lacks integrity. Beatrice doesn’t reproach or berate Dante for his feeling shame. She flat out tells him he’s been unfaithful to her (he had) and just pretending he loves her. Sounds a lotlike a modern woman’s dilemma with infidelity. Given that Miss Beck is openly polyamorous, perhaps thisdoesn’t mean much to her belief system, but Dante is not being remorseful for his “dream world”. He’sbeing chastised for being a hypocrite and, of course, out of integrity. Miss Beck might want to pull backher desire to reinterpret great literature. Otherwise her next book might consider Othello’s murder justa deviation from the normative Shakespearean life.

Way less hippy-esque than one might think
Incredible read, and a very succinct take on some quite ephemeral concepts. Enlightenment might take work and courage, but with Martha’s book, at least it’s not bogged down by religion, tradition or rituals. Recommended!

    Fantastic book!
I regard this as head and shoulders above your average self help book. Intelligent, uniquely creative in her use of Dante’s Divine Comedy as her matrix, a sharp sense of humor, she really delivers on the title. I don’t think there’s anyone who cannot benefit from it to deepen their own self knowledge in a way that leads inevitably to real inner change.

This book is one of the very few books that changed my life. In the year since I bought it and absorbed its lesson — that we cannot be happy unless we are in alignment with ourselves — I left my job and found a better paying one with better work life balance. I learned to stand up for myself. I learned to get rid of the shame and fear that was holding me back for the past 15+ years. I would rank this easily among the 5 best books in my life, not because it was “well-written” (though it is also that) but because of the enormous and life-changing impact it had on me.
