A Harsh Read
Reading this as part of a book club, when it was suggested as the choice for the month, I expected it to be more about the San Francisco earthquake, its historical impact, and family drama interwoven. For me, it turned out to be a very dark story of family disfunction that was disturbing and depressing. It does embrace strong women’s friendships born out of extreme circumstances. Without giving away the end results, it opened up a picture of life in the early 1900’s and much of women’s lives and expectations of their “place” in society from different financal backgrounds which was a plus for finishing the book. If you’re dealing with sorting out life challenges of your own, you might want to pass for now.

The author filled the story with facts that really contributed! I donât often run across a book that I can not stop reading. Finished it in two days. I both read it and listened to it. I recommend listening to the book in order to experience the well done Irish accent.

Ken Wellington –
Liked the authors putting the story into the context of the 1906 earthquake. If nothing else, the story brought to life, for me, that horrible event. I thought the characters were credible, and the outcome satisfying. The confluence of an earthquake and realization that the person the protagonist married is a dangerous psychopath creates an “earth shaking” crisis that is slowly and suspensefully resolved.

Every once in a while, you stumble across a book that is so engaging that you breathe, move, emote with the narrative character. When this happens, you marvel at the power of stories and thank your lucky stars for literacy.Sophie is an emigrant from Ireland to America in the early 20th century. Sheâd give anything to have a life that is secure and comfortable. Lucky for her, she catches an advertisement by a widower with a little girl looking for a bride. In a bid to escape her past, she doesnât realise the gift and the challenges sheâs embarking upon as she accepts the manâs offerâ¦I can go on, but I wish to keep the post-spoiler-free. ð There are myriads of twists and turns, and not everything turns out as it appears, yet, not for once is the reader felt let down.In addition to the incredibly fascinating and engaging narrative, readers also get a glimpse into the horror and shock of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake as (one of the) backdrop to the incredibly resilient story of Sophie and little Kat. Sophie, our central character and narrator, is the standout. Such is the power of her character that if given a choice, she is the kind of character I wish I get to meet. Every character that appears in the story is well etched out. For a strange reason, I visualised Martin (the widower) as Brad Pitt. Maybe if someday the book is turned into a movie, ðAlthough Pitt would be too old to play Martin. The authorâs first-person narrative style is so personally endearing. It is the narrative I personally like to use in my writing and something Iâd like to continue if I ever end up writing for a book.I strongly recommend it. It is not often you come across a book that makes you forget everything else and is absolutely un-put-downable.
