“What does a office utopia appear to be to you?”

That is the query Dr. Ella F. Washington asks firm leaders, and infrequently she hears about a super imaginative and prescient of a company that values variety and inclusion and needs staff to convey their entire selves to work.

However how are you going to get there? Organizations have largely missed the mark on the subject of creating environments the place all staff thrive in an equal and equitable approach, as a result of they deal with variety, fairness, and inclusion (DEI) as a program that will get finished slightly than the mandatory and troublesome journey it’s. A really inclusive office requires invention and reinvention, errors and humility, adaptation to a altering world, fixed reflection, and generally important sacrifice.

The street to an inclusive office is a troublesome one, however you may traverse it, and there is assist alongside the best way. Begin right here with tales of corporations making the mandatory journey, together with Slack, PwC, Greatest Purchase, Denny’s, and lots of others. Hear from firm leaders about their successes and failures, the instances they have been on the vanguard, and the moments they realized that they had far more work to do. These are profiles in perseverance from people who find themselves eager sufficient to acknowledge the necessity for inclusive workplaces and humble sufficient to know they don’t seem to be there but. Alongside the best way, Washington gives a framework for fascinated by the place these corporations are on their journeys and the place you and your organization could also be too.

Progress is difficult gained on the mandatory journey to changing into an inclusive group, but it surely should be gained. John Lewis mentioned it greatest: “You see one thing you need to get finished, you can’t quit, and you can’t give in.”

    A way forward
What I love about this book is the storytelling inside of it. I feel like I get to know the brands and their leaderships and what they’re struggling with because the author lays it out like you’re watching a documentary of a profile piece. I read this book for a program I was participating in and the stories of success are so inspiring. Perhaps you’re a CEO looking for how to improve your company by improving its culture and you need real world examples of companies that have done it successfully. If you are, this book is for you. True case studies that give a way forward. Totally inspiring and God knows we need that right now.

A Necessary Read for a Necessary Journey
I appreciate Dr. Ella Washington’s story-driven and research-grounded approach to exploring DEI management and a call-to-action for organizational leaders who are committed to the challenging work of implementing sustainable DEI strategy. As a new DEI practitioner, this has been a must read for me and our team. The book has served as inspiration as well as a compass as we embark on our own necessary journey to make progress on inclusion and equity in our organization. Readers may be compelled to jump to the chapter that they believe most closely mimics their organization’s stage in a DEI journey, but I encourage readers to start at the introduction to grasp the fullness of the author’s purpose and framework for guiding leaders/organizations to explore (and revisit) their DEI journey stage and actionable steps and strategies towards true inclusion.

    Highly Recommended for Business Leaders!!
This book is a FANTASTIC resource for business leaders. It is a quick read and offers the real life perspectives of executives working to incorporate inclusive leadership practices into their businesses. This book acknowledges that there is not a one size fits all solution– each organization must pay special attention to its needs and incorporate multiple strategies over time for forward progress. Dr. Washington explains DEI as a journey that everyone can and should take, individually and collectively.
