January 2022 NEW, edited and up to date model. (Formatting, spelling and grammar corrections made, plus some new materials added) Please notice, this can be a politically incorrect story. It bashes the present administration. Irony is successful the Powerball lottery six months earlier than the world’s economies meltdown. Entertaining, enlightening “what if” story about the end of the world as we know it. Full of surprises. Dark, but steady.
This is one of those books that was difficult to rate with stars. While the dialog didn’t always flow as smoothly as I would like, the story itself was compelling and at times, riveting. Mr. Tabankin has taken history, mixed with current events, and extrapolated a plot line that takes us to the “what if?”The book begins with a man and his wife working hard and honestly at their chosen professions in a world that has economic and political strife beginning to reach the boil over point all over the world. Everyone is being squeezed by the economic squeeze that is taking place from poor policy decisions made by heads of state, banks, and ruling leaders. In comes the surprise, and the thing that makes this book an out of the box kind of apocalyptic book: Jay wins the lottery!Without giving more away on the plot, let me just say that there are some surprises that take place from there, at least for me. Mr. Tabankin’s grasp of the world situation and the economic decisions made/being made are above average, and he is able to whittle the events into a finely chiseled storyline that twists and turns, driving our family to make decisions that help, and hinder, their survival. The details were excellent, and in fact, I was able to highlight and double check his facts to find that many of the surmises he makes in his plot line were/are truly things that are more than “what if”; they could truly occur. This lent a sense of reality to our current US and world situation that was and is, chilling.I listed the mood as dark because the degradation of the American dream, and the America as we know it, is a dark thing to contemplate, in my opinion. There are also elements of suspense to it frequently enough that it held me captive, making my reading time intense and something to look forward to. I read the book fairly quickly, which is always a good sign for the book. The pace of the story held just the right amount of steadiness – not too fast and intense; just enough detail so that it slowed the adrenalin, and in the end, it rose to a crescendo so that I wasn’t ready to let it go. Because the nature of the book was so dark, to have it go faster would have made it a difficult read, at least for me. So, I give Mr. Tabankin a thumbs up on his pacing. And finally, the characters. As I said in the beginning, the dialog was not as developed as perhaps the story deserved, but it was none-the-less sufficient to develop the characters. You came to know them, to feel like you understood them, to appreciate their failings, and enjoy their triumphs. There were characters that you came to hate, some you dreaded, some you should have hated, but couldn’t and others that you hoped would survive until the end. With the book’s ending, it leaves us hanging on who is still alive after a particularly vicious attack. It gave us a new storyline thread that may prove helpful to our group, or it may prove to be their undoing. Things worldwide are still poised to explode with our Navy ready to meet the challenge…or maybe not. Book 2 should be good!

    What if….
This review is for the first five books in the series. I started reading them and did not stop until finished with #5. If someone had told me ten years ago these would have been remotely possible I would have laughed–now, a lot of what it contains is a logical progression of “what if”. The author does a good job in creating characters that are believable in situations that could be possible. I have enjoyed the books and was disappointed that book #6 is not around yet. I would heartily agree that these books are not politically correct, with that said I still feel they are enjoyable to read and consider. Now I must wait for book #6——dangit!!!!

Excellent story and well worth reading
Excellent story and well worth reading. The main premise of the story is that both the US and EU have an unsustainable debt and that when entitlement payments stop society will break down almost completely. There are also branches of the story covering actions from both Russia and China both of which contributed to the financial meltdown and intend to take advantage of the chaos.

    Middle of the road
Interesting book. I’ve read a lot from this genre. This one, while it had a good story behind it, was very difficult to read. Everytime one of the characters speaks to another, they are addressed by name. I found that unnecessary, and it took a lot away from the flow of things.

    My kind of book …
This is really a very good read. Great storyline, great character development plus a lot of action as the book ends. Read and learn and see what you would do different. I can’t wait for the next book – out in July. Jay, Lacy, and Tony are the leaders. Wait until you read about their background. So read, enjoy and save a little food.

but this is one of the few ‘end of the world as we know it’ books that I could just genuinely enjoy. Though it seems incongruous
I am a fan of the genre and tend to overlook flaws, but this is one of the few ‘end of the world as we know it’ books that I could just genuinely enjoy. Though it seems incongruous to say that a book that deals with financial collapse and financial terrorism can be ‘fun’, that is exactly what the author manages to make it.

    Pretty Good
I loved the story but don’t quite understand how a bunker built underground, beneath the farm and plowing fields would not be discovered by the ones living above ground. This isn’t a ***Spoiler*** because the main characters talk about it all through the book. I definitely want the next book to see how situations either took care of themselves or rapidly deteriorated. That’s all I am saying about that.

Very interesting book. I have wondered if I would do the same as Jay. Win the lottery and move into the country. I remember when Greece through their fit hoping the EU would start to break up. Forgot about some of the effects that could happen. Ira writes the factors that we don’t think about. That is why I like his books. Look forward to reading more of them.

This is a great story well written. The idea of building a huge underground shelter has occurred to lots of us, but we have not got the money. The book drags a bit when the hero is wounded but overall I recommend this series and I will definitely buy the remaining book when it is available.

I really wanted to like this series. Unfortunately, the story has potential but the writing is dreadful.I was hooked enough to see it through each of the following books (2,3&4), but found the reading experience to be very monotone with little character development.

The characters in Tabankin’s books don’t talk to each other, they lecture, endlessly; are never interrupted and repeat the same inane stuff throughout the story. Almost every “conversation” begins with the speaker saying the person’s name who is being spoken to, rather like this: “Bob, I want you to know I’m proud of what you done.” “Chris, I just done it for the family.” “Bob, you are one hell of a guy, even so.” “Chris, shucks, thanks.” Well, I suppose it get’s around Bob said, Chris said, but it (like so much in these books) is so unreal and naive. The plots are okay-ish, so I’ve tried to hang in there with this author, but it’s just too embarrasing to continue reading.
