    Beautiful and Informative Book
This is a wonderful book with beautiful photos and great information. This is part of the Smithsonian Collection and every one of these books is fantastic. As you can see from my photos, each page is laid out very well, with easy-to-read text, and fantastic pictures. These books are for anyone….from younger children to grandparents. My only suggestion to Amazon when shipping these beautiful books is to wrap them in bubble wrap or some protective material to ensure the books arrive in great condition with no dings or rub marks from just being placed in a box with no protective wrap. Most of these books do arrive in good condition, but a little more protection would be appreciated. THANKS and Cheers!

    resource book
This is a great tree book – something for everyone. It has excellent illustrations and photographs, great terminology, well laid out and well written. It is easy to dip into and read a chapter here or there, or straight through over a few days. I will use it as a resource to look things up again. I appreciated the coherent writing on many landscape subjects including: Climate change, deforestation, diversity, and other important topics. I recognized a number of names of people in the field and know they are good sources.

    Thicker than you think
Love this. But this is thick!!!! I imagined it being a fun book for Christmas gift purchase but it is HEFTY and solid. This is a much thicker book than expected. Not a bad thing. Excited for my Carpenter to open his present for his Tree Book. He will love this.

Way more interesting than I was expecting.
I live in a forest and use small books to identify what is what. But often, eh, traded no-name for a Latin name but not much interpretational insight. This is NOT a small book. It has the problem that it is too tall to fit a normal bookshelf. However, the artwork and classification sketches are beautiful as well as useful. The historical information is an unexpected treat. Then the ‘didjaknows’ … a link between sauerkraut & gin? What’s an herb? A bush? A tree? Male & female trees? Really? That fungus in the roots is good? Forest fires are GOOD. An absence of forest fires can cause species loss of wonderful plant types and the animals that NEED them. Latin names don’t give you that. OK, so it doesn’t fit the bookshelf. I can live with that.

This book is more than its title says: The Stories, Science, and History of Trees. It is also a gallery of tree portraits. Every part of the book is very nicely illustrated but also very soundly documented. In particular, the tree portraits are not mere tree pictures. Indeed, the book is full of nice pictures, but each tree portrait shows its botanical portrait, as details of the tree leaves, flowers and seeds, or vignettes of other species in the same genus, and also its social portrait, as its economical role, or its place in popular culture. It is a book for all tree lovers, be they amateurs, students, or botanists.

This is a creation of beauty. Art in book form. The pictures, details and drawings throughout are exquisite. I purchased this for my father and have now ordered another for myself. I had no idea the range in appearance of trees from their ancient form to present day. As a writer of fiction this is an essential resource for world building. As a lover of nature this is gem indeed.
