A Life Lesson about Love, Friendship and Family for All Ages
Anyone who has ever had a child (or been one) and anyone who has ever had a friend (or been one) will find herself or himself in this book. And anyone who has never had a friend like Holly, even for a short time, will wish to pluck her out of these pages and keep her for their own and forever. I love her.Everyone – child, teen or adult – has had some of the kinds of pain that Niki, and her mother, father and brother (and even her bad best friend, Ava) have in this story. Rachel Vail shows their hurt with such honesty and clarity that you want to physically enter the book, find them and hold them tight and find a way to make things better, or at least less painful. Her portrayal of younger brother Danny – and of Niki’s love and anger and hurt for him, and of Mom’s and Dad’s – are heartbreakingly real. This is an inspiring story, peopled with great characters and deep emotion. It is a book to be experienced or absorbed more than merely read.

    Powerful life lesson!
I am a psychologist who has worked with kids and families for many years.Rachel Vail has captured the intensity, importance, and often devastation, of adolescent friendship in her new novel, Bad Best Friend.Rachel Vail has beautifully portrayed the dynamics of a loving family, including Niki, a strong, empathic, main character and her younger brother, a strong, straight forward, and often wise Danny, who is on the Autism spectrum. While Bad Best Friend is written for teenagers (and they will love it!), this is a book I would also recommend for all parents. Who has not experienced the disappointment of someone you considered to be your friend and found out you were wrong? The characters in Bad Best Friend will stay with you long after you have read this wonderful novel.

    NOT JUST FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLERS!!!
You don’t have to be a young adult to love Bad Best Friend! Even therapists, middle school parents, and anyone who knows a child with unusual behavior will have an “aha” moment with Rachel Vail’s fast-moving novel.I didn’t want to put it down. My heart went out to 8th grader Niki at important crossroads in her life. She is making difficult choices about good friends. Her parents are totally closed down about her brother Danny’s social isolation and sudden outbursts. Her relationship with her best friend is challenged. She begins to discover boys. Vail whips this all together and leaves us with meaningful thoughts and conclusions through Niki’s eyes.PS: I think therapists should hand this book out to every family searching for answers to a child with what today is called spectrum disorder.

You will love this book and it will stick with you
I am an adult but I enjoy YA fiction with my daughter, and I absolutely adored this book! My favorite Book by Rachel Vail yet. Reading it – even as an adult – I found many of the characters’ feelings relatable, and especially the complicated dynamic of the main character Niki and her parents and her brother on the autism spectrum (my brother too is autistic on the very severely effected end of the spectrum) and the friend dynamics, I like that this book gives young people an example of how to survive losing a best friend (who feels like your only friend) and be better off on the other side of that. I also like that goodness prevails !

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING BOOK: TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO READ, YOUR FAMILY, AND READ AGAIN!
What do you do when your best friend dumps you in eighth grade, and you are the last person to find out. Ask Rachel Vail. The title of her new book says it all, Bad Best Friend. We have all had a bad best friend, and Vail has a great talent for capturing the universal experience for most girls of having your best friend dump you to move up the social ladder. In Niki’s case, her best friend Ava dumps her to pair with a new gym buddy, right in front of her very own eyes, and becomes a new member of the popular group- The Squad. An added layer of complexity is that Niki feels alone as her younger brother Danny is on the spectrum or rather “special” and that defines much of her family life. Ultimately, Niki realizes her so-called best friend, Ava, is manipulating her, and she stands up for herself. Vail cleverly includes so many meaningful take-home messages; you can count on your parents even if things get tough, great friends just pick up where they left off, and most importantly, good always triumphs over evil.As we all remember, self-doubt, friendship insecurity, and concern over self-image are hallmarks of the middle school experience. Niki does not realize her so-called best friend is manipulating her. Ava tells Niki they can be friends in private. This makes Niki feels like she is the bad best friend when, in fact, Ava was abusing her trust and insecurities. Vail captures this internal dialogue seamlessly of a struggling and insecure teenager trying to figure out how to be popular, how to flirt, how not to embarrass herself. Enter Holly, Niki’s childhood best friend, who is the girl we all want to be, cool, confident, kind, and generous, who extends her friendship to Niki unconditionally. Niki and Holly pick-up where they left off as little kids, old friends are always good friends. Niki also struggles with being a bad sister, loving and hating her younger brother as he is extra, extra special on the spectrum, “i.e., gifted. Danny throws tantrums, big ones and has few friends, and Niki’s mom doesn’t want him labeled. The whole town knows but Niki’s mom. Vail doesn’t dwell on his “disability,” and we always see the sunny side of Danny’s gifts and wisdom. Danny has the sweetest authentic outlook, a delightful sense of humor, and deep insights, and Vail has a very clever way of tying this all together in the end. Niki realizes she loves her brother, and then some, and it’s ok once in a while to be frustrated and mad. Life can be messy, full of lots of uncomfortable feelings. There are so many heartbreaking, hilarious, infuriating, and wonderful moments in Bad, Best Friend. It will transport you back to your childhood. It is an amazing read and also an excellent resource for parents to read with their children to learn how to approach conflict in a healthy way. Vail leaves you feeling hopeful with so many uplifting messages. Ultimately, Niki finds her voice and honesty, while hurtful, can set you free. There are so many pearls of wisdom in this book. Tell your friends to read it, your family, then read it again! I will!
