Just the right approacj
This is perfect – introduces the word roots with explanations that are clear and focused, and the following pages are challenging enough for my upper level learners but not overwhelming for my struggling learners. I can pick and choose which activities or assignments to use, and I know my students are receiving a good foundation of vocabulary expansion for the future. It also provides them with an understanding that other languages, particularly Spanish, share our language roots (ahem – let the Spanish speakers guide us on this one).

Lots of student work. Not much instruction.
Great for worksheets to supplement learning. Not a stand alone for instruction or home schooling.

Simple fun activities that does teach Latin & Greek roots. My son likes it.
My son is going into 8th grade and requested help with learning Greek & Latin roots because he thought it would help him with spelling, reading comprehension and science. Just to be clear, my son generally dislikes workbooks. The summer bridge workbook I bought him, he found boring and he completely far less than half. However, heâs been really enjoying this workbook. The workbook is slim, 1/5 the size of a summer bridge workbook but the activities are fun which means heâs actually completing the work. Frankly, for his age, the activities are simple, crosswords, fill in the black, word matching etc. but they *do* drill home the roots and thatâs the point. My son has been doing this and alongside the âninja rootsâ flash cards I bought on amazon also. There is some overlap in roots so far but they reinforce each other. The flash cards are interactive (with me) and verbal, the workbook is independent and written. I wish there was a book 2 and 3, because heâs definitely picking up the info and there are a lot more roots out there to learn.

Great for middle school students
I purchased this workbook to use with my 7th and 8th grade children. The work itself is on the easier side, but the introduction to the Greek and Latin roots is exactly what they needed. I do not recommend simply allowing students to do the worksheets and moving on as they will retain very little of the information. We are using this as a springboard to have a family challenge where we are all looking for the Greek and Latin roots in our reading each week, competing to see who can find the most words! My favorite part of the workbook is the connection to Greek or Latin phrases they have heard before, such as “e pluribus unum” and “et cetera”. I highly recommend this book.

Beware of inaccuracies
I haven’t gone through the whole book yet, but when I looked at Unit 1, spec is listed as a Latin root; the base is actually spect. I will go through these and make notes on the pages as necessary before I have my child fill out, but it will be confusing for the exercises that have a certain number of letters, such as crossword, word puzzle, etc. I meant for this to be independent work for my homeschooler while I’m teaching other children, and it will require more explanations than I had hoped.

Great…but I want more!
This is for 4th – 8th grades. As a homeschool mom I could see using this with a 3rd grader and also with a 9th/10th grader as a intro and then to be expanded upon with a “search” for more words that use the same roots. My only complaint is I WANT MORE! Either a book two or three or more added to this book. These worksheets are self explanatory and can be utilized for both self teaching, one on one teaching or for learning as a group.Worksheets include:Introduction of root in a fun fill-in-the-blank way.Complete the sentences and draw a picture for understanding.Crossword puzzle.Student-made word cards—reminder cards.Picture cards to cut and paste to an index student made word card. (These can be colored or even enlarged for a chart or folder project.)Review games.roots include…aqua, bio, gen, mater, spec, cogn, loc, nat, ped, sign, aud, nov, pel, mand, trib….and many more.

I bought this for my grade 8 homeschooler. While fairly easy and not as many words as we would have liked, it was quite interesting and my daughter really enjoyed it.
