Just what we need right now!!! Uplifting, hopeful and action-oriented!
This book is brilliant!! In a time in which we seem so connected through technology and social media, but really struggle to find people to really support us when we need them, this book serves as an accountability partner to building the friendships in your life that you can really count on. As a psychologist, I often hear adults complain that it feels nearly impossible to build new friendships and this book really challenges those notions in the kindest and most generous of ways and helps you to really apply concrete methodologies (I could see the thoughtful psych research everywhere) to build at whatever pace you are comfortable with. Some of my favorite parts (and I had a ton) were the “Try It” sections which gave you a concrete activity to apply the lessons from the chapter. In addition, the book is just incredibly beautiful!! I really appreciated the “tough love” conversations that were given through the author’s own experiences and I could often identify with them, but then I would see the most captivating and light image that would help take me to the next place of considering what I was going to do with those feelings and what step I was going to take to move closer to deepening and making new friendships. There are these amazing sections in the end that I thought would be great for people who moved to a new city or wanted to build friendships quickly for one reason or another — it lays out a step-by-step plan to build friendships quickly. One plan is for 2 weeks! And then she ends the book a list of questions that you can use as you build new friendships that take it out of the typical “What do you do?” experience. This book is one that I am definitely going to recommend to clients when they struggle to make new friends or believe that those days are over. This book is uplifting, hopeful, and action-oriented — it will completely change your mind about the belief that you can only make friends in certain periods or ways. It’s a revelation!!!

Serious, Thoughtful, Beautifully Produced
This book has lots of good advice on building relationships with new friends when you’re out of college and grad school. It is well written. I saw not a single typo. The artwork is fun but also serious. So is the book. It includes a bibliography and source notes at the end, another sign of being a serious piece of work. Congratulations to Kat Vellos for putting together a great book that I think may improve readers’ lives.

Great Illustrations, Fun Meditation on the Problem of Making Friends as an Adult
I picked this up during a period of instability and disconnection with some of my friendships. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and o was delighted to find that the author does, too. Thereâs a lot of directly relevant context and detail for those living in the Bay Area.I wasnât blown away by the novelty of the advice in this book â the advice felt intuitive and straightforward. The techniques and challenges in the book feel valuable, but predictable. If youâve been thinking about the âmaking friendsâ problem for a while, this book will feel like review.

Okay content. Good layout. Great drawings
A light read. Can be a gift for your introvert friends. A serious handbook/tool kit? Not at all.

useful, actionable advice
Kat is a go-to researcher for practical friendship information, especially how to very intentionally go about making friends. She has fun illustrations and really good tips. If youâre moving to a new city or just feeling like a shake up to your social life, Katâs book is a winner. One of the most practical ones Iâve read. Less theory and more action. Yes! Kat is my guest on episode 25 of Dear Nina: Conversations About Friendshipâ âImproving Group Textsâ.

Great insights and information
I first attended a virtual friendship workshop where Kat was the speaker. I assumed she would be European, judging by her name; but was pleasantly surprised to see she was a woman of color like myself. Kat exceeded my expectations. She was warm, witty, and full of useful, practical, and insightful tips on cultivating meaningful connections and friendships of all kinds. This book is just like her, warm and witty and a great resource. Highly recommend.

Exactly what I was looking for
So so validating with useful, practical tips! I feel so much less crazy!! I have been feeling so out of sorts about how hard friendship is in LA compared to my experiences in Europe, and now I know – it’s real. Also, I have a bunch of ideas on how to create the deep friendships that make you belong in the town I was born in, so I am supposed to belong in, but just don’t feel like I do!
