Jumpstart Back to school week with Kindness

Great, simple way to introduce and reinforce kindness in the classroom!
As a teacher, we had a motto in my classroom: “Be safe, be kind, be your best self.” It was tough to teach kindness though, because it’s often thought of as a personality trait or an attitude. This book is a great resource on actually teaching the skill of kindness to students.
Will You Be the I in Kind? is full of valuable examples of how to be kind in every day life. These examples are specific enough to be those observable, measurable behaviors we know and love but general enough to be applied to a variety of situations. Also, it can be used with a variety of ages. While it’s definitely leaning towards a younger, more elementary crowd, it’s not too “baby-ish” for reading to older kids too. A bonus for me is that there are great tips included for “Ways to Nurture Kindness in Children.” These skills are sometimes tough for us adults (maybe because we were never taught?), and the list of ideas will help you put kindness into practice in your home or school.

Another Julia Cook instant Classic for my Counseling Library!
“Will you be the I in Kind” is the perfect book to encourage kindness in the classroom. Go on an adventure searching for the “I’ in Kind. Along the way, different kids learn how to be kind. Here is what they learn:
    -Smile with kind eyes
-Be aware of what others might need and help when you can
-Pick up litter to be kind to our planet.
-Show an interest in other people, take the focus off you. Make everyone feel significant. Pay attention to the good things they do.
-Be patient, and let others have a turn.
-Do a random act of kindness, without expecting anything in return.
I love how the book goes into specifics about exactly how a person can be kind. Often, we tell kids to show kindness or be nice but we don’t tell them how. Teaching kids exactly what they can do to be kind encourages more kind acts because they have examples of what to do. The illustrations are beautiful and I love the diverse characters. It is a great addition to your classroom or counseling library.

A wonderful book for teaching kindness!
“Will You Be the I in Kind” is a beautifully illustrated picture book written for ages 4-10 that defines “kindness” in appropriate terms, and then uses some a social story to show children what they can do to be kind. Julia Cook’s titles always do a wonderful job explaining some pretty big concepts to children in ways they can understand and then provides appropriate examples illustrating how to incorporate these concepts into their everyday routines. This story would be great for home, classroom, or for social groups and is suitable for atypical children as well. I am a huge fan of Julia Cook and have many of her titles in my collection, which my son calls, “books to make me behave.” Another excellent addition to her long list of wonderful titles!

    Kindness is so important
Everyone should always have a reminder to be kind. This book is targeted at younger elementary school kids, reminding them of different ways to be kind. This shows them that kindness is found in not just saying kind words, but in actions as well (being patient, for example). It’s important for kids (and anyone, really) to remember that being kind is something simple that everyone can do, at any point. You can be the “I” in kind.
I think this book would be perfect for K-2 classrooms. I can see parents or educators reading this book to their kids to enforce the rules of the school or the house… and just to remind everyone that kindness can go a long way.
