Spot the sleeping animals as the story unfolds, then find out about their hibernation habits from the knowledge pages on the finish.

Co-authors Sean Taylor (image ebook writer) and Alex Morss (ecologist, journalist, and educator) provide a mild introduction to the idea of hibernation. Within the frosty, quiet forest, the snow blankets the bottom and the bushes have shed their leaves. The place have all of the animals gone? Are they asleep too?

After the story, annotated illustrations clarify the hibernation info for every animal and what they may do once they get up for spring.

Beautiful illustrations and story! Very informative
This book is stunning. I used UT for a hibernation study with our coop and we all enjoyed it very much! The illustrations are just beautiful as well as the story! There’s also a lot of information at the end of the book about different types of animals/insects and how they hibernate. I would compare this to the very popular story, Over and Under the Snow. And I would confidently say, this story trumps that story any day! Just as beautiful illustrations (I’d argue ever more beautiful), but not nearly as dull.

    Perfect winter book
This is a beautiful story and our little bit LOVES it. She loves the grandma in the story. And maybe because she has a very close relationship with her grandma but she loves this book. We read it once a day. I love that it discusses things that are natural and open up her curiosity. Great winter resource book for homeschool. We can develop projects off of this.

    Lovely story
A lovely story with beautiful illustrations, Winter Sleep is the story of a young boy staying at his grandmother’s house during the winter. When he was there in the summer, the animals and plants were thriving. Now, months later, he doesn’t see any of the vibrant life he saw before. Granny Sylvie explains life is simply different in the winter, because many animals hibernate. They talk about bats and bears, caves and tree trunks as she leads him through the forest. In the end, the boy falls asleep cuddled up warm in bed as Granny continues to tell him about hibernation. The story is nice but a bit outshone by the illustrations. The book is worth the illustrations alone—gorgeous depictions of trees, snow, and wildlife. There is an excellent section after the story which discusses how different animals hibernate, such as: polar bears, wood frogs, ladybugs, etc.I received a free copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This is a very sweet story of a boy visiting his grandmother in the summer and then again in the winter when everything looks different. The grandson asks where all the animals and insects are and the grandmother explains where they all sleep during the winter. It really gets young kids thinking about the differences in the seasons, and helps them understand things like life cycles. Things shared in this book prompted my children to want to learn more about certain animals and insects, and we’ve had many great conversations over it. I’d highly recommend it for a young child’s collection.
