    Shockingly Awesome
The headline might sound like I came in with super low expectations, and that was kind of true. I was just not that excited about the topic and (self-righteously) generally love longer, more scholarly Christian books. But I follow Drew on Twitter and he constantly has me cracking up, so I figured I would give his book a shot. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable, convicting books I’ve ever read. You can tell that Drew did a ton of research and selectively chose only the most helpful anecdotes, studies and insights to share – keeping the book short and easy to read. It was a humbling reminder that not every great Christian book needs to be 500 pages with 80 pages of footnotes! The most powerful part about the book though was how the author let his unique voice shine though. Rarely does a book ever cause me to smile while I’m reading it, even if I think a line is particularly witty. This book had me laughing out loud on multiple occasions. Drew is self-deprecating, hilarious and incredibly vulnerable. More than anything, the practical guidance, scriptural insights, scientific research and inspiring stories have really helped me to re-evaluate my own self-control and shined a light on the areas of my life that were held captive by a lack of self-control. I will definitely re-read this and I highly recommend this book to anyone.

    Insightful read
Thoughtful, engaging, honest, humorous, relatable, practical, and theologically robust. I mostly enjoyed the chapter dealing with our role and God’s role in sanctification – we don’t teach this thoroughly or accurately enough in our studies of the Bible. Love this excerpt from the book: “Discounting our role in sanctification leads to license. Ignoring God’s role leads to legalism… We’re commanded to ‘make every effort’ because ‘His divine power had given us everything we need for a godly life.’ Divine empowerment and human effort aren’t enemies. They’re allies. God has given us His power. That’s why we strive… Obeying God’s commands is impossible apart from God’s strength. But we still have to obey.” I also enjoyed how practical and scientifically grounded this book; as a result, it compels someone who isn’t necessarily a believer to delve into the Bible. Also important is how, as a reader, Drew’s self-deprecating (in a good way) transparency allowed me to feel like he is on the journey with me trying to master self-control. He is very intentional on letting the reader know that he has failed tremendously and repeatedly, yet he keeps in trying. Hence, as a reader, you don’t feel like you’re being preached to; rather, you feel like you are on a journey with a fellow struggling follower of Christ.

solid tome on an important topic.
Much like self control, nothing about this book screams with a lot of sexy sizzle or pizzazz. But it’s full of good research and helpful ideas delivered in an approachable way. Worth the read.

Helpful book… Now… I just have to do the thing…
I am grateful that Drew wrote this book. This book excels in three things:1. Establishing self control as central to any Christian who wants to live faithfully. He establishes that self-control is a biblical trait and a fruit of the Spirit which Christians should seek to cultivate through effort and the power of the Spirit. He argues well for the foundational nature of self-control in the struggle for sanctification and growth as a person.2. Describing the effects of sin on self-control. Drew explains the fallenness of human nature well. We are “bent” toward lack of control and lack of discipline. We need new life in Christ and the power of God to change us from the inside and to make our efforts at self-control fruitful.3. Marking out the proper goals for self-improvement. So many people approach “self-help” or self-improvement books with the idea of improving their focus, habits, or lifestyle so that they can be happy and successful and rich. Drew points out that people who pursue self-improvement with these motives often destroy their lives and alienate their families with their self-focus. He looks at the two greatest commandments and reminds us that we should seek to improve ourselves with two simple goals in mind: love God and love others. We ought pursue personal growth so that we can love God more deeply and love our neighbors more effectively.I am grateful that Drew wrote this book, and I commend it to you.

    Don’t Pass Up This One!
I stumbled across this gem while looking for something else and I am SO GLAD I did. This book is so good. I went back to read it a second time so I could highlight key quotes and sections and make notes. I always find when authors write in their own experience in using the advice to be very brave. Your success or failure is out there for everyone to see. But, it serves a grand purpose of making the reader feel camaraderie – it’s so easy to feel alone in our failure because no one wants to talk about it. Mr. Dyck TALKS ABOUT IT and it’s awesome! This books is also so easy to read and just keep going and going and going – I found it difficult to put down. We all struggle with self-control, whether we want to admit it or not, and this is the perfect read to help get you to recognize it and work toward gaining more of it.Not only is this a study of self-control, but it’s a BIBLICAL study of self-control. While the author consults many earthly experts and research, it’s the Godly research that really brings it home. Well done! Give it a read.

    Drew Does It Again!
I first read Drew’s book Just Show Up about a month ago and was completely blown away. I just finished this one and blown away again! Mr.Dyck has a way of drawing you in and convicting your socks off without laying guilt trips. One way he does this is with his sense of humor and self deprecating. He blows it like the rest if us but gets up, dusts himself off and forges ahead once again. I recommend this book to every Christian who wants their faith to be authentic.

Wow. The timing of me reading this book couldn’t have been better for my spiritual life–for my family life–for my writing life. Just when I was freed from a tight schedule I found myself floundering to make wise use of my newly-found, free time. The motivation, inspiration, and scientific evidence in this book helped me make the changes I needed. Hence, here I am writing a review instead of falling into the abyss of social media like I was prone to do before I took more charge of my day. This book is a pleasant answer to my prayer: “Help me, dear Lord, get done what You want me to get done.”Drew Dyck generously shares funny and poignant stories from his own life so that reader trusts what he’s saying is truth. This book isn’t a sermon, it’s an act of service for anyone who wants to live a life that follows Christ’s calling.Drew makes us laugh while grabbing our attention to not fritter our lives away giving into feel good temptations that don’t leave us feeling good. He gently encourages us to raise the level of our self-control bit by bit so we don’t bite off more than we’re ready for.Even though I was already moderate in most areas of my life, this book helped me reach for higher ground instead of camping out on a plateau that prevented me from being all that God wants me to be.Thank you, Drew Dyck, for writing a bold and brave book that lives up to its title.

This is a fabulous book. The author has an easy, honest style and says a lot in few words. The relationship between theology and psychology also feels organic and not like tuna and peanut butter forced to go together, which could easily have been the case . We discussed some of the concepts at a mens breakfast and the conversation was brilliant – highly recommended.

Drew Dyck has written a great book that connects Biblical principles with scientific understanding when it comes to self-control. This attribute is valued by biblical writers and somewhat misunderstood by todays Christians. Drew’s research, vulnerability and Biblical understanding create a manuscript that is unique and should be of interest to todays leaders. Self-control does not mean you are regulating God’s role in your life to second place, it is the exact opposite – it is not always about us! Part spiritual warfare, part willpower muscles, part healthy habits and discipline. Drew takes us down a path that includes help with digital devices and understanding our capacity to be an addict.
